The game board was found in a roof plate of a temple in Qurna, Egypt, which was built around the year 1400 BC. The diagram was also found during excavations in Troy and in Ireland in the county of Wicklow an engraving in a stone from the Bronze Age was found. It was probably brought to northern Europe by tradesmen from Greece and Phoenicia. Centuries later, the Vikings also used the same game board chart. A mill game board has been found in a ninth-century ship's grave (Gokstadschip) found in Norway around 1900.
